Undercarriage Wear: When to Replace Track Links, Shoes, and Rollers
Undercarriage is 20–30% of a machine's maintenance cost. Knowing the wear limits saves you money and avoids sudden failures.
The undercarriage is the most expensive wear component on any track-type machine. Replacing it too early wastes money; replacing it too late damages the track frame, final drive, and sprockets.
Track Links
Check for stretched pitch — measure pin-to-pin distance at regular intervals. A stretched pitch accelerates wear on the sprocket and causes the track to slap.
Track Shoes
Inspect grouser height; below 50% of new height, traction and stability drop sharply on soft terrain.
Rollers & Idlers
Check flange wear and look for leaks from the seals. Worn flanges cause track derailing and damage to the link side surfaces.
Sprockets
Inspect tooth profile. Hooked teeth are a sign of over-tensioning or pitch mismatch with the bushings.
A simple rule: measure and document wear every 250–500 hours, and plan replacement with your parts supplier to avoid downtime. Premium aftermarket parts with proper heat treatment deliver OEM-equivalent life at a fraction of the price.
